Four Tips For Preventing Rat Infestation

With the weather getting cooler outside, rats and mice often look to find warmer shelter for the colder months, which can mean your home. So we're giving you tips for preventing rat infestation.

Most people don't know they have a rat infestation until it's too late, so keeping rodents away from your living area is essential as they can carry many diseases.

Seal up the Small Stuff

Seal up any holes or small spaces that connect the outside to the inside of your home. Double-check the screens and borders of your windows and doors, both from the inside and outside. Look at your attics or garages and the foundation of your house. Remember that rats and mice are small and can squeeze into even the tiniest of holes.

Cleaning up the Yard

Keeping the outside area of your home clean and free of piles of debris is another way to keep rats away from your home. Like we said earlier, with the colder months approaching, they will find warmth anywhere they can, which may mean a pile of debris or leaves.

Storing Your Food Properly

Keeping the inside of your home clean is a great way to prevent rats or mice, but it's not always about just cleaning up after yourself. You want to ensure that the way you store food will keep rats out. Think about your pantry and if you have anything a rat can chew through. We recommend storing food in plastic containers. A great way to prevent rats is to keep your garbage can lids sealed tightly, both inside and outside.

Signs of A Rat Infestation

If you notice chewed-up wires or bite marks on furniture or kitchen cupboards, you may have a rodent problem.  Small rats can fit through a hole the size of a quarter, about 0.96 inches, and mice can squeeze through a hole that is ¼ inch in width, so they can go anywhere in your home. If you find rat droppings, try to dispose of them immediately and safely. You'll also want to spray a disinfectant around the area as rats can carry many diseases.
